Rosemary and Friends is a series of early to middle elementary reader chapter books that feature a single recipe at the end. But the real treat in each book is the story. Each book in the series stars a child who is new to America or is the first-generation American child of immigrant parents. The star's struggle for assimilation into all of American culture - not just pop culture - involves a dish from his or her parents' native land. In the Rosemary and Friends series, Rosemary Mead and her classmates in Miss Bentz's 4th-grade class at Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Ashleyville embark on adventures that deal with real-world problems in a way only a child can deal with them. You're probably thinking to yourself that the real world just isn't like that - people of different cultures just don't get along. People are prejudiced against something and they always will be. That is true in Ashleyville, where the real world exists with all its warts and blessings. Rosemary and Friends bring a little something extra, however, something we've almost forgotten how to do as human beings: hope. Send an email to Jef Benedetti jefbenedetti@hotmail.com |
